News: The 2nd Wave Ska Charity Fundraiser

by Adam Aiken

An evening of ska planned for Norwich this summer will raise money for a couple of good causes.

NR SKA will be the headliners at The 2nd Wave Ska Charity Fundraiser event, in aid of Cancer Research UK and suicide-prevention charity Papyrus.

Also on the bill will be The Dreaming Void, playing their post-wave synth rock originals, and Terry Adams.

Tonic Ska Radio presenter Andy T will be in the main room and northern soul DJ Steve Greensides will be in the bar.

The event will take place on Friday, August 16.

“We all have personal reasons for supporting different causes,” says NR SKA frontwoman Lydia Greyson.

“Most of us either have been affected by cancer in some way or know someone who has been.

“My dad was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumour five years ago and received brilliant treatment at Addenbrooke’s, thanks to all of the amazing research being carried out across the country.”

She adds: “My brother, who was a successful sports coach, took his life almost 10 years ago, and it seemed fitting to mark the occasion with a fundraiser donating half of the proceeds to such a worthy cause.

“Papyrus is such an important charity for young people as prevention is the key factor in gaining trust and having open discussions about the issues young people are facing and experiencing.”

The evening will pay homage to Terry Hall, the late Specials frontman who was the founding patron of Tonic Music – a group that uses music and the arts to help people with mental illness – and will also recognise the work of fellow Special Neville Staple (who’s recently stopped performing due to a heart defect) and his wife Christine, who are behind the biannual Skamouth.

The bands will play for free and all the proceeds from the event will go to the two good causes.

Raffle prizes on the night will include a signed bass guitar.
