Preview: GWAR

by Adam Aiken

Cult heavy-metallers GWAR are bringing their Black Death Rager world tour to Norwich this weekend as they continue their attempt “to conquer an insignificant shitball floating in a dark corner of the universe: the planet Earth”.

With more than a dozen albums in their locker since their first incarnation in 1988, their set at The Waterfront on Saturday, August 13, is likely to contain songs from throughout the band’s history, including from this year’s The New Dark Ages release.

In terms of personnel, GWAR have been something of a revolving door, and the current line-up – which includes The Beserker Blóthar, Beefcake the Mighty, Pustulus Maximus, BälSäc the Jaws of Death and JiZMak da Gusha – doesn’t include any original members.

But the band – which also includes Bonesnapper (“crappy vocals”) and Sawborg Destructo (“annoying vocals”) – continues to rant about our “great mistakes”, from politics, pollution and organised religion to fast food and factory-farming.

Support on the tour comes from Party Cannon.
